Eternals 'Review Bombed' For Chloe Zhao Representation

Just a few days before its worldwide release, Marvel Studios’ Eternals is being ‘’review-bombed’’ on the popular movie and T.V information site IMDB by anti-Marvel fans because of the film’s inclusion of an LGBTQ+ relationship.

Eternals features, for the first time in a Marvel movie, an openly gay superhero in Bryan Tyree Henry’ Phastos.

In Eternals, Phastos has a husband and a child during the present-day portion of the movie. This inclusion, while praised by many, made some people on the internet not really happy. This led to a few people leaving one-star reviews on IMDB’s user reviews section of the Eternals page without having ever seen the movie.

The hundreds of reviews have now been deleted as IMDB only allows user reviews from people who have actually seen the movie. The simple existence of an on-screen LGBTQ+ relationship is also not a good enough reason to rate the movie this low. Films are not exempt from criticism but that criticism needs to be made with valid arguments, not with the simple existence of representation in the latest Marvel movie. For example, fans justifiably criticized the single lackluster LGBTQ+ representation in Avengers: Endgame which was overly publicized for in the end, being a simple throwaway line.

Eternals actor, Kumail Nanjiani, expressed his opinion on the subject in a now-deleted tweet: "Looks like we’re upsetting the right people. Eternals opens November 5th."

Marvel Studios’ Eternals currently sits at a 59% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes ahead of the official theatrical release, on November 5th. Making it the first-ever Marvel movie to receive the "rotten" status on the popular review site.
