Robert Downey Jr. Almost Played Doctor Doom Instead Of Iron Man...

It's not every day that an actor as revolutionary as Robert Downey Jr plays a comic book character that affects millions of people across the world, and started the whole of the MCU.

What If... Robert Downey Jr. played someone else instead of Iron Man?

It's recently come to light that before RDJ scored the role of Tony Stark in 2008, he was infact in talks to play Doctor Doom.

A brand new book titled 'The Story of Marvel Studios: The Making of the Marvel Cinematic Universe' recently hit stores, and it contains pages and pages of information on how the MCU came around and how Iron Man became the Iron Man we know and love.

As the book goes over the casting of Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, the most curious piece of information is casually dropped in by Iron Man director and our very own Happy Hogan, Jon Favreau. According to Jon,

“Marvel had already met with Robert Downey Jr. before, I think, to play Doctor Doom.”

However, the debut of Doctor Doom was in Fantastic Four that released in 2005, while Fox still had complete control over the characters. So if Marvel did approach RDJ with the role, it wouldn't be the same Marvel behind Iron Man that was released 3 years later in 2008.

However, with the ever-expanding Marvel universe and Spider-Man No Way Home almost confirming the multiverse, could it be possible we see Robert Downey Jr, or another Tony Stark variant, become the Infamous Iron Man? Following the rumours that we might see Tom Cruise as an alternative earth Tony Stark, John Krasinksi as Captain America and Liam Hemsworth as Thor, a Doctor Doom/Iron man doesn't seem to far out of reach...

Who knows what the MCU has in store for us in the next 10 years.
